the first heirloom tomatoes of the season - hurrah!

Mmmmm.... It's finally heirloom time again! I still do not understand why, in California, we cannot have these beauties all year round, but would I appreciate them as much if we did? Do not ask how much these cost, just know that it was plenty and that they were delicious and a good sign of things to come for the summer!

What did we do with them? We cooked half of them down in a little sauce with some onion, garlic, the usual suspects. Added some white fish filet pieces, and for the last minute or two added in the rest of the tomatoes chopped. It was like a tomato-fish soup. Oh, and we served it with jerusalem artichoke pasta. But it was really more like a soup. Yummy.

The Japanese Treats entry was kind of unusual in that (well, aside from being Japanese) it was all about desserts. We do not make many desserts. Desserts are often time-consuming and labor intensive and very sensitive to odd things like exact ratios and number of kneadings or how quickly something is added. So we tend to not have many desserts and may instead have a piece of chocolate or the like. But I feel along with the start of the tomato season , I must also praise the beginning of the strawberry season. Oh, sure, you can get strawberries nearly all the time, but these were sweet and delicious and so-so good. Organic, of course!
