Tacos al Tepotzlan

As promised in my previous post on our recent excursion south of the border, which can be found here (http://hd-dinnerblog.blogspot.com/2008/02/ahhh-mexico.html), here are examples of some of the things we were eating while in Mexico.

In Tepotzlan, there is a wonderful local market, where you can get fresh vegetables, dried grains, spicy peanuts, scarves, blankets, toys, churros, pigs heads, and various known and unknown fresh cooked meals, too.
The taco stand I tried made all sorts of delicious tacos and similar items. There were a variety of fillings to choose from:
Some of the favorites of the region included a mushroom that grows on corn (huitlacoche), tacos al pastor, and squash blossoms (flor de calabaza), picture below:

The market is in the zocalo (center of town) and there are numerous shops and ice cream stores around, too. The church is adjacent and we witnessed 2 funeral processions when were there on a Saturday. There were 6 pall bearers for each casket at all times which traded on and off and more going up steps. Leading the way before each were musicians - in one case a small group of mariachis, and the other a single singer/trumpeter. Families and friends all swarmed along from the church, down the main street in town, to the cemetery. Bringing up the rear of each procession was an incense burner.

This is the church in Tepotlan:
Photos below are of the cemetery.
